Overview

The Karangahake Gorge is rich in history. In From the Edge of the Sky: A Memoir, Maurice Shadbolt remembers the gorge as a thriving gold-mining area, of which little remains. Within the valley is the settlements of Mackaytown, Karangahake and Waikino. State Highway 2 goes through the valley between Paeroa and Waihi. During summer months, the Waikino-Waihi railway, gold-mine remains, walkways, picnic spots and local cafe are popular.
