Soft Drink Background

Paeroa is most well-known for the Coca-Cola 'L&P' soft drink that has become a New Zealand icon, or an item of 'kiwiana' as authors Richard Wolfe and Stephen Barnett call it. The 'Lemon and Paeroa' beverage was originally produced from the mineral water of the town, and a giant bottle near the town's centre stands to commemorate it. The bottle is among New Zealand's most popular photograph opportunities. The visitor attraction to the town is so significant that a local L&P Cafe and Bar has tried to sell L&P flavoured ice-cream and related merchandise.
