Hamilton is one of New Zealand's five major centres, the largest inland city and is a key centre for farming, industry, finance and education, with the Waikato University, Wintec polytechnic and other educational institutions serving an estimated 25000 students.
Although not a major tourist destination, the city is home to riverside attractions such as Hamilton Gardens, the Waikato Museum, Sky Riverside casino and entertainment complex and the Waipa Delta ferry, linked by a growing series of river walkways that wind peacefully alongside the river. A short drive from the city is the Hamilton Zoo, also a popular local attraction.

The National Agricultural Fieldays and the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre represent the city's importance to the surrounding dairy farming area and the local 'Mooloo' cow district mascot represents this importance.
As well as the National Agricultural Fieldays, other major events include the popular Hamilton Gardens Summer Festival, a celebration of local and national artistic and musical talent, the Pacific Rose Bowl featuring the Waikato National Art Award and the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta.
