Butler House is an important part of the historical tourist attraction, and originates from the 1840's. The colonial and Victorian furniture of whaling captain William Butler's home provide a fascinating insight into New Zealand's colonial years.

Featured is displays of equipment, whaleboats and harpoons, as well as paintings and prints of whaling scenes. The Museum's collection of whaling artefacts includes scrimshaw.

The Butler Family Cemetery is situated alongside the group of ancient Pohutukawa trees, including New Zealand's largest, with a 10.9m trunk circumference. The gardens also feature an Olive and Magnolia Grandiflora tree that is over 160 years old.
