Patea is a beach located in the South Taranaki Bigh. State Highway 3 passes through the town towards Wanganui. A large concrete model of the Aotea waka stands to remember early Maori settlers. From Mount Taranaki, Patea River passes through Stratford and between various mountain ranges, ending in Patea, where the river follows along it for a short distance. Several lakes are also situated nearby.
