Oakura is a small beach settlement situated near State Highway 45 south-east of New Plymouth. Historically, the town was the location of the second partof the New Zealand Wars on May 4, 1863. Today the town is a more peaceful summer destination, attracting swimmers and campers. The name Oakura translates to "place of flashing red", which refers to the cloak of the mythical Maori character Tui.
