Edendale is located at the 1860's sheep station operated for the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, a group of Scotish societies. Thomas Brydone, superintendent of the company, suggested coverting the estate to dairying in 1881 because it was so hard to sell. A year later he built the country's first dairy factory, one of eighty to be built in the region over the next 50 years and the only one still remaining.

Visitors to the small rural town of Edendale enjoy the town's fishing spots and local gardens, while the local area relies primarily on dairy farming.
