Glenavy is situated on the Waitaki River and offers much to anglers, including accommodation, river access, jetboats, fishing guides and excellent salmon fishing opportunities. A local restaurant, ‘The Carriage’ Restaurant and Takeway –is an unusual local attraction in a restored railway carriage that has been placed on its side.
It was originally named as Waitaki North, but in 1890 was named after the home of then-prime minister John Ballance in Country Atrim, Northern Ireland.
