What is the New Zealand television industry like?

New Zealand television is dominated by Government-owned broadcasters. The government owns two of the five nationwide television networks and private networks struggle to increase market share. New Zealand is a small market given its size and the investment required.

Networks are not legally required to show commercials or non-religious paid programming on Sunday mornings, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. Further, the government-owned Television New Zealand continues to hold a strong vieiwer base from its 40-year history, previously as the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. Television New Zealand is a commercial broadcaster and a government-funded public broadcaster.

What role does news play on New Zealand television?

In New Zealand there are three free-to-air evening news broadcasts on television. Prime Television broadcasts an early evening newscast from Sydney in Australia, while Television One and Television Three have locally-produced evening newscasts at 6PM.

The competition between these two networks is huge. While One News picks national appeal across all target audiences, 3 News attracts high ratings from the important young Auckland market which advertisters are trying hardest to reach.

Every year the Qantas Media Awards announce what they consider to be the best evening news bulletin and the award is often a huge boost to winning network. Also, whenever one of these news services launch or reluanch it is followed by a relaunch from the other network.
