Otematata translates to "place of good flint" and was formed in 1958 to service the Aviemore and Benmore dams. The Benmore Dam can be visited by members of the public. For a time it was the largest dam in the southern hemisphere to be constructed of soil and it is currently New Zealand's largest human-constructed lake.
