Overview

Karikari Peninsula is situated on the western side of Doubtless Bay. Gumdiggers cleared the dense Kauri forest that once covered the coast and drained Lake Ohia. Stumps of Kauri trees estimated to be around 30,000 years old can be seen from a boardwalk. Various beaches are located along Karikari Peninsula, including Tokerua Beach, Whatuwhiwhi, Matai Bay and Karikari Beach. The most western point is Knuckle Point and the most northern point is Cape Karikari, or Whakapouaka as it is called in Mäori.
