Overview

Collingwood is located at the mouth of Aorere River and the entrance to the Ruataniwha Inlet. The twon was originally named Gibbstown, but it was renamed Collingwood in early European settlement with the intention of making it the country's capital city. The name began being used by locals when rebuilding after 1859 fires.
