Taihape is known across New Zealand as the "gumboot capital of New Zealand" and this is reinforced by gumboot days, gumboot throwing lanes, Gumboot Manor and other gumboot-related attractions and events that are an essential part of the town's local culture.
The town also has several shops, cafes and parks. It's proximity to the ski fields, location on State Highway 1 and distinctive gumboot character are major reasons for it's iconic popularity. Local activities include rafting, walking, bungee-jumping, horse trekking and golf.
