Overview

Occupational health and safety in New Zealand is managed by a government department that operates within the Department of Labour.

The Occupational Safety and Heatlh Department, known as OSH for short, aims to promote good management and enforce regulatory requirements in order to prevent workplace injuries. It favours to encourage and educate good practices rather tan enforce them, but regulations continue to become stricter on employers. They are also responsible for regulating the storage and use of hazardous substances, explosives and dangerous goods, and for the safety of amusement devices.
