The Waitaki Valley is an area along the Waitaki River. It offers a huge range of water-based recreational activities and attracts many fishers. The Awakino Skifield is located near the valley.
Several hydro dames have been constructed along the river, with the first being built in 1930.
The settlement of Kurow is based along the Waitaki River in the Waitaki Valley. The settlement's main street has many interesting stone buildings rich in history.
