Hurunui translates literally to "large and plentiful hair." The famous local Hurunui Hotel opened in 1860 to cater for the Nelson farmers travelling to the Christchurch stock sales. The town was the agricultural gateway to Canterbury where all stock entering the region had to be "dipped" to prevent the spread of disease, similar to customs at a modern airport.
