Methven is a major accomodation based for visitors to Mt Hutt. It is set in the farmland of the Canterbury Plans, and State Highway 77 runs through it, past the Mt Hutt village to Homebush.
The Canterbury Plains offer what many think to be the best hot air ballooning opportunities in New Zealand. The Rakaia River leading from the Southern Alps offers great opportunities for jet-boating and troat-fishing. Golf courses are located near Ruapuna, Ashburton and Methven.
