Waiuku is a historic town that has been an important link between the Waikato River and the Manukau Harbour since before European settlement. The first European settlement was for flax trading in the 1830's, but by the 1850's it had become an important link for trading food between Waikato and the growing Auckland area.
Visitors to the town are able to enjoy the heritage trail and local pioneer museum that outlines this town's fascinating history, while the Waiuku Wharf is home to a sailing scow. The town is located along the Waiuku River, which translates to "water with white clay."
