Close to half of Australia is located in the tropics, and a vast area of the mainland is a dry region of desert and scrubland commonly referred to as "the Outback." This region has little rainfall and therefore most of it is uninhabitable. The most sheltered areas are along the east coast, particuarly Victoria and New South Wales. Mountains and hills in these areas protect many urban areas from strong weather. This is also the only place in Australia to experience any significant higher rainfall than the centre of Australia.
