Mabo, Koiki (Eddie) (1936-1992) was born in the Torres Straits (Murray Island). In 1982 Mabo and others claimed ownership of their land and in 1992 in a ground breaking decision the High Court of Australia agreed the Mer people owned the land before European settlement.
