The City of Brisbane Act was passed in 1924 establishing the first local governing body or city council from 1925.

Wards

The Brisbane City Council comprises 26 geographically defined areas known as wards. Each ward elects a local council representative.
Each ward is made up of a number of Brisbane suburbs in whole or in part and links to details of each ward are provided above. The suburbs are also listed as localities within the Open Encyclopedia Project. (See Localities ).

The wards are Acacia Ridge, Bracken Ridge, Central, Chandler, Deagon, Doboy, Dutton Park, East Brisbane, Enoggera, Grange, Hamilton, Holland Park, Jamboree, Marchant, McDowall, Moorooka, Morningside, Northgate, Pullenvale, Richlands, Runcorn, The Gap, Toowong, Walter Taylor, Wishart, and Wynnum Manly.

Lord Mayors of Brisbane

The Lord Mayor is elected by the majority vote of all residents.
Voting occurs every four years and is due in 2004.
