City Features - The Gateway Bridge

Construction commenced in 1980 on this six-lane concrete bridge which was finished in 1986 costing $140 million (Aus). Its single span crosses the Brisbane River close to its mouth and allows traffic to bypass the city from north and south along the arterial highway. It replaced a multivehicle ferry crossing that had been present for many years. The last ferry is now an entertainment vessel known as 'The Island' that travels the river.

Climate - Flooding

Brisbane has been inundated twice by severe flooding in 1893 and again in 1974. In 1974 more than 600mm of rain fell on the city in three days, killing 15 people, flooding a large portion of the city and resulting in damage of over $200 million (Aus).

On January 27, during the 1974 floods with the Brisbane River flowing at over 14 knots, the 66,700 tonne tanker Robert Miller was swept from its moorings from the Evans Deakin shipyards near the Story Bridge. The tug Carlock, and following the removal of a log trapped in the propellor, the ship's own engines held the vessel against the rivers force. had it jammed across the river the flood may have risen even higher than it did.

While being held it is reported that the boat was hit with a number of barges, trees and even a caravan before the floods eased.

The Robert Miller was sold for scrap in 2000 in Bangladesh for $2,012,985 (US).
