Premier Peter Beattie announced Queensland would go to a state election on February 7, 2004, exactly ten days short of three years since the previous election. On that occasion Labor won 66 of the 89 seats in Parliament and formed a majority Government.

Queensland's longest serving premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen turned 93. It is 16 years since his term as premier ended.

The Ravenswood Gold Mine selling for almost $60 million (Aus). Produces almost 78,000 ounces of gold annually.

14 January 2004, Wednesday

The Tourism Minister, Ms Merri Rose, resigned on this day from Cabinet as the Government prepares for the election.

15 January 2004, Thursday

A week of heavy rain in outback Queensland caused many dry rivers and creeks to commence flowing again after 5 years. Some drivers were stranded and in Mt Isa, 30 homes were inundated following the prolonged drought.

7 February 2004, Saturday

Today the Queensland people vote in the State Elections. It is a contest between the sitting Labor Government led by Peter Beattie and Lawrence Springbourg leading an opposition coalition of the National Party and the Liberal Party. The polls leading up to the election indicated a continuation of government under the Labour Party.
