Professor Richard Weston of Cardiff University in his book on Jorn Utzon; Utzon. Inspiration, Vision, Architecture (Edition Blondal, Hellerup (2002), ISBN 87-88978-98-2); is reported to have stated that all art can be thought of as either 'carving' or 'modelling'.
Modelling sees the materials as formless, unresisting and 'so much to impose upon', while carving implies an intimate interaction between the material and creator.
