Tacoma is the third largest city in the state of Washington. According to the United States Census Burea the population in 2000 was 193,556. The census bureau esimated the population to be 196,790 in 2003.

The city is a part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area. It is the the seat of Pierce county. It has an area of 50.1 square miles. Pacific Lutheran University, University of Puget Sound and Tacoma Community College are in Tacoma. Fireboat No. 1 and Fort Nisqually Granary are local sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
