San Antonio

San Antonio is the county seat of Bexar County, Texas in the United States. The city is located at the source of the San Antonio River. The city is a part of the San Antonio metro area. It has an area of 407.6 square miles.

The village of San Fernando de Béxar was founded in 1731 by settlers from the Canary Islands. The town was officially renamed San Antonio in 1837 after the battle of the Alamo. The name is taken from the San Antonio de Bexar Presidio (fortress) destroyed in that battle.

In 2000, San Antonio was the ninth largest city in the United States, with a population of 1,154,897. San Antonio is the third largest in the state of Texas. It is the the ninth most populous city in the United States.

The census bureau esimated the population to be 1,214,725 in 2003. According to this estimate, the city is gaining population at a rate of 1.44% per year. This estimate also has the city passing Dallas and moving into eighth place on the list of most populous US cities.

San Antonio has several notable tourist attractions including a downtown Riverwalk and the Alamo, as well as Sea World and Six Flags theme parks. San Antonio is visited by 20 million tourists per year.

The city is home to several military bases including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City Base.

SBC Communications and Clear Channel Communications are headquartered in San Antonio.

Many colleges and universities including University of the Incarnate Word, Saint Mary's University, Trinity University and University of Texas at San Antonio are in San Antonio. Many local historic sites including Alamo is a local site listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

San Antonio International airport serves the city. Interstate Highways 10, 35 and 37 run through San Antonio. Woodlawn Lake, Elmendorf Lake and the San Antonio River are near or in the city.

According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 29°25'26" north and 98°29'36" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 4865000.

Winters are mild with little rain. The average daily mean temperature is 52°f during December, January, and February. Summers are very hot with some rain and have an average daily mean temperature of 83°f during June, July, and August.
