Plano is located in Collin County, Texas and is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The city is located on the blackland prairie of north Texas, less than twenty miles Northeast of Dallas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 222,030.
The town grew up in the mid nineteenth century around a gristmill, general store and post office. The founders understood the Spanish word “Plano” to mean “plain” (“flat” is actually a more correct translation) and the postal service accepted it as the name for the town in 1852. Plano was platted and incorporated in 1873. The city name is pronounced plā´nō (plain-o).
