General Information

Fort Worth is the sixth-largest city in the state of Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 534,694. It is the among the thirty largest cities in the United States.

It is the seat of Tarrant County, and it located on the Trinity River about 30 miles west of Dallas. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area which is often called the "Metroplex". It has an area of 292.5 square miles.

According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 32°43'31" north and 97°19'14" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 4827000.

Fort Worth began as a military camp in 1849. A railroad was completed 1876 with its southern terminus just north of Fort Worth. This established the town as a meatpacking and cattle-shipping point. The city is named after General William Worth.

The census bureau esimated the population to be 585,122 in 2003. According to this estimate, the city is gaining population at a rate of 2.15% per year.

Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, College of Saint Thomas More and Tarrant County College District are in Fort Worth.

Dallas/Fort Worth International airport serves the city. Highways 20, 30 and 35 run through Fort Worth. Benbrook Lake and Eagle Mountain Lake are near or in the city.

The city has a humid subtropical climate with an annual precipitation of 34.73 inches. Winters are generally cool with little precipitation and summers are very hot with little rain.
