Dallas

Dallas is one of the ten largest cities in the United States. It is the county seat of Dallas County and small portions of the city also extend into four neighboring counties. Dallas is the second most populous city in the state of Texas. According to the United States Census Burea the population in 2000 was 1,188,580. The census bureau esimated the population to be 1,208,318 in 2003. It has an area of 342.5 square miles.

The city is located in North Texas on the Trinity River. Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and the surrounding communities, make up a large Metro area called the “Metroplex”, the 49th most populous metropolitan area in the world, and the 9th most populous in the US.

According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 32°47'00" north and 96°48'00" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 4819000.

Before 1930, cotton agriculture was the primary economic engine for Dallas, but after the discovery of the great East Texas oil field that year, the city became a major centre of the petroleum industry. The Aircraft and Insurance industries have also had important roles in shaping the city.

Dallas may have been named for George Dallas; a Philadelphia lawyer who supported annexation of Texas and became Vice President of the US after the city’s name was formally adopted.

Many colleges and universities including Southern Methodist University and Dallas Baptist University are in Dallas. Dealy Plaza Historic District and Fair Park Texas Centennial Buildings are local sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Dallas Love Field airport serves the city. Interstate Highways 20, 30, 35 and 45 pass through Dallas.

Winters are cool with little precipitation. The average daily mean temperature is 47°f during December, January, and February. Summers are very hot with little rain and have an average daily mean temperature of 83°f during June, July, and August.
