Summer 2000 - Texas Drought

The worst drought ever recorded in Texas, broke records set during the dustbowl. Austin had 41 days of at least 100º f weather and reached a record high temperature of 112º f.

Thirteen people drowned and $36 million in damages occurred. Shoal Creek normally flows at 90 gallons per minute, but peaked during this flood at 6 million gallons/minute.

A powerful storm began 32 days of rain, resulting in flooding all across Austin and Central Texas.

Two tornadoes simultaneously swept through different portions of Austin, killing thirteen persons inflicting damage of $350,000.

McDonald Dam was destroyed, sending a wall of water down the Colorado River which killed dozens. The river peaked at 60' high.
