1730 – Franciscan Friars found the Mission San Jose de los Nazonis at Barton Springs.
1835 – Joseph Harrell founds the hamlet of Waterloo.
1839 – Land for Austin purchased by the Republic of Texas and the city is incorporated.
1842 – Republic of Texas President Sam Houston moves the state capital from Austin to Houston. Austinites refuse to relinquish governmental archives.
1845 – State capital moved back to Austin when Texas is annexed by the United States.
1865 – Union troops occupy the city after the Civil War ends.
1871 – Freetown of Clarksville founded by emancipated slaves.
1871 – Houston and Texas Central Railway begins operation.
1881 – University of Texas established
1884 – City Hospital contructed.
1893 – Austin Dam completed, damming the Colorado River and impounding Lake McDonald.
1895 – Moonlight Towers installed.
1888 – New Capitol building completed.
1900 – Austin Dam collapses.
1918 – City acquires Barton Springs.
1930 – A municipal airport opens.
1940 – Miller Dam is completed forming Lake Austin on the Colorado River.
1941 – Mansfield Dam is completed impounding Lake Travis.
1942 – Del Valle Army Air Base (later Bergstrom Air Force Base) begins operation.
