Geographic Features

  • Interstate Highway 35 runs north and south through Austin. It extends through San Antonio and eventually to Laredo on the Mexican border to the south and through Waco and Dallas to the North.
  • Texas Highway 183 enters Austin from the northwest and runs through northern Austin eventually reaching the eastern edge of the city where it continues south.
  • Downtown Austin is laid out on a grid system with east-west streets typically being numbered and north-south streets generally being named after Texas rivers.
  • Congress Avenue extends from the capital building across Town Lake and into south Austin.
  • The Colorado River runs generally eastward from Lake Travis into Lake Austin and then through Central Austin. In the downtown area, the Colorado River is called "Town Lake".
  • Mt. Bonnell is said to be the highest point in central Austin. Its peak is approximately 780 feet above sea level. Mount Bonnell overlooks Lake Austin and provides a good view of the University of Texas and downtown.
