Austin was chartered in 1839 as the capital of the Republic of Texas and became the state capital in 1846 when Texas joined the Union and became the twenty-eighth state of the United States of America.

In the year 2000, Austin was the fourth-largest city in Texas (behind Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio), and the 16th largest in the U.S. The census bureau esimated the population to be 672,011 in 2003. Austin is the county seat of Travis County and extends into Williamson County to the north. The city is a part of the Austin-Round Rock metro area. It has an area of 251.5 square miles.
Located in the Central Texas Hill Country, Austin is less than 250 miles from Mexico and less than 200 miles from 3 of the 10 largest U.S. cities. Many colleges and universities including University of Texas at Austin, Saint Edward's University, Concordia University at Austin, Huston-Tillotson College and Austin Community College are in Austin. Austin-Bergstrom International airport serves the city. Interstate Highway 35 runs through Austin. Lake Austin and Lake Travis are near or in the city.
