New York City is the most populous city in the United States, and the second in North America after Mexico City. It is among the 15 largest cities in the world. In 1624 the Dutch established New Netherland a colony on the Atlantic Coast of North America, with the town of New Amsterdam on the lower tip of Manhattan as its capital. New York City became the capital of the new British colony of New York.

Many colleges and universities including New York University, Columbia University, City University of New York, Barnard College and Marymount Manhattan College are in New York City. John F Kennedy International and La Guardia airports serve the city. Highways 87, 278, 295 and 678 pass through New York City. The city is on the North Atlantic Ocean seaboard.
