New York City

New York City is the most populous city in the United States, and the second in North America after Mexico City. It is among the 15 largest cities in the world. According to the United States Census Burea the population in 2000 was 8,008,278. The census bureau esimated the population to be 8,085,742 in 2003.

New York City is officially named “The City of New York” and is known affectionately as the "Big Apple". The City of New York is composed of five boroughs; Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

In 1624 the Dutch established New Netherland a colony on the Atlantic Coast of North America, with the town of New Amsterdam on the lower tip of Manhattan as its capital. The indigenous population was forced out the area of European settlement in a series of bloody battles. In 1664 the English took the colony and renamed it for the duke of York. New York City became the capital of the new British colony of New York.

New York City is a vibrant center for commerce and business and one of the three “world cities” (along with London and Tokyo) that are at the center of world finance. Manufacturing, media production, publishing, and financial services are some of the city’s major industries.

The city is a part of the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island metro area. It is the in Bronx, Kings, Manhattan, Queens, and Richmond county. It has an area of 303.3 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 40°42'51" north and 74°00'23" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 3651000.

Many colleges and universities including New York University, Columbia University, City University of New York, Barnard College and Marymount Manhattan College are in New York City. Many local historic sites including Carnegie Hall, Central Park, the Empire State Building and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

John F Kennedy International and La Guardia airports serve the city. Highways 87, 278, 295 and 678 pass through New York City. The city is on the North Atlantic Ocean seaboard.

Winters are cool with moderate precipitation. The average daily mean temperature is 35°f during December, January, and February. Summers are hot and rainy and have an average daily mean temperature of 75°f during June, July, and August.
