Historic Significance: During the Pleistocene Geologic Epoch giant mastodons, wooly mammoths and ground sloths were attracted to the salt marsh, called a "lick", which trapped and preserved the fossilized bones of many. Thus the name "Big Bone Lick". The fossilized remains of these prehistoric animals were discovered in 1739 and displayed extensively at museums throughout the world. Notable Americans such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin personally examined the fossils, many of which are on display today at Big Bone Lick Museum. The scientific community recognizes the site as the "Birthplace of American Vertebrate Paleontology."

Geologic significance: Over millions of years the Russell Fork River has carved a canyon five miles long and 1,600 feet deep through the Pine Mountains. Passes through these rugged mountains were called "breaks" by early settlers. Daniel Boone is credited with discovering The Breaks in 1767 as he attempted to find trails into Kentucky, but he was not able to pass through the wild gorge with its miles of whitewater rapids.
