Louisville

On election day in November 2000, the voters of Jefferson County and Louisville, Kentucky approved a plan to merge their two governments, with the resulting city to be called Louisville Metro. An election to fill the newly defined government offices was held in November 2002, and the merger plan went into effect in January 2003.

Jefferson County voters rejected three previous merger referendums, in 1956, 1982, and 1983.

More than doubling Louisville's population as a result of the merger secures Louisville as Kentucky's largest city. The merger also boosted Louisville to the 16th largest city in the United States, as of 2003.
