Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois. According to the United States Census Burea the population in 2000 was 2,896,016. It is the the third most populous city in the United States. The census bureau esimated the population to be 2,869,121 in 2003.

The city is a part of the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet metro area. It is the the seat of Cook county. It has an area of 227.1 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 41°51'00" north and 87°39'00" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 1714000.

Many colleges and universities including University of Chicago, Loyola University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, DePaul University and Chicago State University are in Chicago. Many local historic sites including Wrigley Field, Old Stone Gate, Chicago Union Stockyards and Roebuck Sears and Company are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chicago O'Hare International and Chicago Midway International airports serve the city. Highways 55, 57, 65, 80, 88, 90, 94 and 196 pass through Chicago. Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, the Calumet River and Calumet Lake are near or in the city.

Winters are cold with little precipitation. The average daily mean temperature is 25°f during December, January, and February. Summers are warm with moderate rain and have an average daily mean temperature of 71°f during June, July, and August.
