Pocatello was founded in 1882. Settlers were not able to claim land until 1891 due to the area being part of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The city received it's charter in 1893. The name chosen was in honor of a Bannock Indian chief.

The city is a part of the Pocatello metro area. It is the the seat of Bannock county. It has an area of 28.2 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 42°52'17" north and 112°26'41" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 1664090.

Idaho State University is in Pocatello.

Interstate Highways 15 and 86 pass through Pocatello.
