Denver

Denver was established by prospectors on November 22, 1858, after they discovered gold at the confluence of the Cherry Creek and the South Platte Rivers. The town was named in honor of James W. Denver, Governor of Kansas Territory, which included eastern Colorado at that time.

Denver is the most populous city in the state of Colorado. It is the state capital. The city is located on the plains just east of the foothills of the Rockies. Denver is known as the “Mile High” city because the city’s official altitude measured at one of the steps leading up to the capital building is 1 mile (5,280 feet) above sea level.

As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 554,636, and the metro area population was 2,581,506. The Denver metro area is the nineteenth largest in the United States and it is the twenty-fifth largest city. The census bureau esimated the population to be 557,478 in 2003.

The city is a part of the Denver-Aurora metro area. It is coextensive with Denver county. It has an area of 153.4 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 39°44'21" north and 104°59'03" west. The city and county have a consolidated city-county government. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 0820000.

Many colleges and universities including University of Denver, University of Colorado at Denver and Community College of Denver are in Denver.

Denver International airport serves the city. Interstate Highways 70, 25 and 76 run through Denver. Cherry Creek Lake is in or near the city.

The city has a temperate climate with an annual precipitation of 15.81 inches. Winters are generally cold with very little precipitation and summers are warm with little rain.
