Denver was established by prospectors on November 22, 1858, after they discovered gold at the confluence of the Cherry Creek and the South Platte Rivers. The town was named in honor of James W. Denver, Governor of Kansas Territory, which included eastern Colorado at that time.
Denver is the most populous city in the state of Colorado. It is the state capital. The city is located on the plains just east of the foothills of the Rockies.
