Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs was founded in August 1871 by William Jackson Palmer. Palmer owned the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad which ran through the area and the combination of nearby hot springs and natural beauty made it a good location for a resort.

The city had a population of 360,890 according to the 2000 census and is the second largest city in Colorado. It is the county seat of El Paso County. It is located close to the geographic center of Colorado, near the base of Pikes Peak, on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains.

The city is a part of the Colorado Springs metro area. It has an area of 185.7 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 38°50'02" north and 104°49'15" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 0816000.

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Colorado College and Pikes Peak Community College are in Colorado Springs.

City of Colorado Springs Municipal airport serves the city. Interstate Highway 25 runs through Colorado Springs. Big Johnson Reservoir and Rampart Reservoir are near or in the city.

The city has an arid steppe climate with an annual precipitation of 17.40 inches. Winters are generally cold with very little precipitation and summers are warm with some rain.
