Aurora

Aurora is the third most populous community in Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 276,393.

In 1891, Donald Fletcher founded a small farming community on the plains east of Denver. It was originally named Fletcher by its founder. In 1907, the town changed its name to Aurora. In 1929, Colorado's Secretary of State recognized Aurora as a city, and tax revenues were appropriated for sewers, roads and fire stations.

Aurora is located in Arapahoe County and extends into neighboring Adams County and Douglas County. Located just east of downtown Denver, the city is just 15 minutes from Denver International Airport.

The census bureau esimated the population to be 290,418 in 2003. According to this estimate, the city is gaining population at a rate of 1.21% per year.

The city is a part of the Denver-Aurora metro area. It has an area of 142.5 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 39°43'46" north and 104°49'53" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 0804000.

Community College of Aurora is in Aurora.

Highways 70 and 225 run through Aurora. Aurora Reservoir and Cherry Creek Lake are near or in the city.
