Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a large port city on the Pacific Ocean in the US State of California. The city was founded September 4, 1781. The settlements official name was El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles (The Town of the Queen of the Angels). Los Angeles was incorporated as a city of the state of California on April 4, 1850.

Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and among the fifty largest in the world. According to the United States Census Burea the population in 2000 was 3,694,820. It is the the second most populous city in the United States. The census bureau esimated the population to be 3,819,951 in 2003. According to this estimate, the city is gaining population at a rate of 0.82% per year.

The city is a part of the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metro area. It is the the seat of Los Angeles county. It has an area of 469.1 square miles. According to the US Geologic Survey, the city is at 34°03'08" north and 118°14'34" west. The Federal Information Processing Standards location code (FIPS55) for this city is 0644000.

Many colleges and universities including University of Southern California, University of California-Los Angeles, Loyola Marymount University, California State University-Los Angeles and Los Angeles City College are in Los Angeles. Many local historic sites including Watts Towers and Little Tokyo Historic District are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Los Angeles International airport serves the city. Interstate Highways 10, 15 and 5 pass through Los Angeles. The Pacific Ocean is in or near the city.

Winters are mild with some rain. The average daily mean temperature is 58°f during December, January, and February. Summers are warm with almost no rain and have an average daily mean temperature of 69°f during June, July, and August.
