Nova Scotia is a Maritime province located east of New Brunswick. It is bordered on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, and by the Bay of Fundy. It is attached to New Brunswick by the Chignecto Isthmus and is a short trip over the water to Prince Edward Island or Maine, and a day trip by ferry to Newfoundland. The province actually consists of the peninsula just described and of Cape Breton Island which is to the north and attached via the Canso Causeway.
As a coastal province almost completely surrounded by water, Nova Scotia is home to more than 3,800 islands, some small and some large. The coastline stretches for 7,400 kilometres and is indented by thousands of bays and inlets.
Politically, Nova Scotia is divided into 18 Counties and 24 Rural Municipalities, plus incorporated towns, cities and Regional Municipalities
