The main City in County Galway is also called Galway. Galway (Gaillimh) City is situated where the river Corrib meets the sea at Galway Bay. It was a thriving Anglo-Norman city because of the trade links with Europe, especially France and Spain. These links have influenced architecture in the city as with the Spanish Arch built in 1584. Today Galway is a modern university city supported by a high technology industry, and has become cosmopolitan in nature as a result of the Celtic Tiger and migrant workforce that it brought with it.
Eyre Square is the main park in the City and has been recently refurbished to upgrade underground services/infra-structure, as well as its overground appearance. It has won a few design prizes already, and is located immediately in front of Ceannt Station. This station is the central hub for public transport including train platforms.
Salthill is known as a tourist attraction, mainly due to its Promenade; a dedicated walking path by the beach and Galway Bay. It also has an indoor swimming pool and entertainment facilities for children.
Other areas within City limits are Renmore, Mervue, and Knocknacarra.
