The Age Of Settlement (874 to 930)

Recent archeological findings in the Vestmann island have shown that people of Scandinavian stock had already settled in Iceland as early as 500 CE but most pople consider the age of settlement to start with Ingólfur Árnason and the finding of Reykjavík in 874 as documented in the 12th century manuscript "Landnámabók" (lit. book of settlements). Early settlers where mostly Norwegians fleeing political and religious strife in their home country along with Irishmen of Scandinavian origin fleeing similar conditions in the green isle.
