With a name that translates literally as "The Peoples Alliance" this is the local equalent to a communist party, founded in 1968 as an offshot from Alþýðuflokkurinn by members that though the party was not left wing enough. By the 1990´s the Alþýðubandalagið had become bigger than the original party but fragmentation on the left wing of politics kept them out of office. The party merged with Jafnaðarmenn and Kvennalistinn to form the Samfylkingin in 1999 in order to rectify this but the attempt misfired as some of the more hardcore member split from that party and formed the Vinstrihreyfingin, end result was that the long running centre/right coalition governmet of Framsóknarflokkurinn and Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn is still in power.

A long running party with politics slightly left of centre, merged with Jafnaðarmenn Íslands and Þjóðvaki in 1996 to form the Jafnaðarmenn party. Originally founded in 1916 with the aim of being "the working mans party", it had formal relations with ASÍ (A national coalition of unions) until 1940 but veered over time closer to the centre of politics and had by the sixties become more of a Social Democratic style entity.

The worlds first women only party, founded in 1983 in order to increase the representation of women in the national and local politics. The party was wildly succesful in it´s early years but quickly gained a reputation of being difficult to work with which meant that they had problems getting into power even where they had quite a sizeable representation. Merged with Alþýðubandalagið and Jafnaðarmenn in 1999 to form Samfylkingin.
With a name that tranlates as "The left wing movement - Green " Formed in 1999 by ex-members of the Alþýðubandalagið who where unhappy about it´s merger with Jafnaðarmenn. The party is an odd blend of ultra left wing politics and populism that is pecularily Scandinavian, the party is trying to appeal to the "green" interests but this seems to be more of a populist stance than a major part of their manifesto, at the least all of their current members of Alþingi and in local governments appear to be from a typical left wing background rather than from the ecological movement. Currently has 5 members in Alþingi.

The local branch of the Natural Law Party and not a popular lot by the look of thing, they newertheless managed to run for Alþingi in quite a few locations in the 1995 elections. Current status is unknown.
