Overview

Media in Turkmenistan is totally under control of the government. Even if there was some effort to open private TV channels between 1995-1999, currently there is no private media owners in the region. Exceptions are some minor publishers like some journals comming from ITTU (International Turkmen Turkish University), "Afisha" paper containing weekly TV schedule for russian channels and a few others.

Turkmenistan government has more than 20 nationwide and local newspapers, about 10 magazines, and 3 TV channels (in 2004 government signed an agreemnt with foreign companies to open forth TV channel).

Information Agencies

There is only one information agency owned by government "Turkmen Dovlet habarlar Gullugy" (or Turkmen State Information Agency). It's headquarters are in Ashgabat and provides news to TV channels, papers, radios. They can be reached by e-mail tpress@online.tm or via phone +99312391221.

Turkmen National TV - Radio Company is another branch that controls government media. One of the TV programs it servers is "Echo of the Planet" (sponsored by MFA of Turkmenistan).
