Overview

The Turkmenistan education system is mainly based on the old USSR education system.

Saparmurat NIYAZOV, the President, suggested a new system which currently lasts for nine years in total for primary, secondary and high school education. After nine years students (at the age of 15) become officialy graduated and can enter a university only after 2 years of "intern" program, which they are to complete according to the subject they wish to study in the university. University programs are usually four years.

Turkmenistan currently doesn't have an afterschool education for Masters(M.S.) or Doctoral(Ph.D.) programs. Students, who are able to go abroad get their postgraduate degrees there.

On June 1 2004, Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Education implemented President Saparmurat Niyazov’s order to invalidate all higher education degrees received outside the country since 1993, and to dismiss holders of such degrees from state jobs. Decree No. 126, as the new measure is called, is the latest in a long series of educational restrictions.

Language of instruction

In the USSR times, primary education language was russian, which is now replaced with turkmen in most of the schools leaving russian language on the second place.

There are both russian and turkmen language schools where primary education language is one of these, but ratio of turkmen schools to russian ones increases with each year. English language is also taught in schools in "English language" lessons.

In country functions a lot of international schools which are the most popular and give the best education to citizens of Turkmenistan. Among such schools are Turkmen-Turkish, Russian (opened by Russian Federation) and American schools.

It will be unfair not to note that Turkmen-Turkish schools have reputation much more better than others. There are more than 25 such schools which offer primary, secondary and high school education. Languages of instruction in these schools are english, russian, turkish and turkmen. Students of this schools brought and continue to bring fame to Turkmenistan by gaining high ranks in international olympiads and competitions. Much of the students from Turkmenistan studying abroad are from these schools
