Overview

At least two known UV monitoring instruments exist in Malaysia. The first is a Brewer MK II which is operated by the Malaysian Meteorological Service. Ms. Leong Chow Peng is the contact person for this instrument. The Brewer has been taking both ozone and UV measurements since October of 1992. The main purpose of the ozone measurements is to determine current ozone levels and trends. The data are also reported to the World Ozone Data Centre to be included in the Global Ozone Observing System data set. They are also planning to use the UV data to perform impact studies. It is their hope to use the data collected in conjunction with data obtained elsewhere in order to promote interest in epidemiological studies in Malaysia.

The second instrument is a YES UV-B and is operated by Dr. Mohamad Ilyas of the University of Science Malaysia. Not much is known about this particular instrument. There was mention of a research paper to be sent to us explaining the monitoring performed by Dr. Ilyas. However, we have not yet obtained it.
