Overview

Professor Malcolm Scourfield at the University of Natal currently has 4 instruments monitoring UV in South Africa. There are twoYES UVB-1s, and 2 SAOZ spectrophotometers. The two SAOZs measure total column ozone and other trace species. They are located in Durban and Sanae ( Antarctica ). The YES records integrated spectrum every 5 minutes and the SAOZs take measurements daily.

Prof. Scourfield is a member of the Ozone Group, Space Physics Research Institute, Dept. of Physics, University of Natal. The other members of the group are Dr. Judy Stephenson and Graham Tilbury. Prof. Scourfield suggests that we contact the South African Weather Bureau concerning their instruments.

* All monitoring ongoing but Sanae Base closed down for 1995 and 1996. The new base will have a different location to that given above for Sanae, at 71.40.0' South, 02.50.5' West. During February of 1997 a SAOZ (330) and UVB-1 (326) are expected to become operational. The SAOZ at Durban began monitoring in late 1991, but continuous data are available only from July, 1993.
